"All right, that's it, flatfoot. You want the benefits of free trade? Food is cheaper. Food is cheaper! Clothes are cheaper, steel is cheaper, cars are cheaper--. Phone service is cheaper! You feel me building a rhythm here? That's 'cause I'm a speechwriter, I know how to make a point. It lowers prices, it raises income--. Y'see what I did with "lowers" and "raises," there? It's called the science of listener attention. We did repetition, we did floating opposites--. And now you end with the one that's not like the others. Ready? Free trade stops wars. Heh! And that's it. FREE TRADE STOPS WARS! Can we figure out a way to fix the rest?

"One world, one peace, I'm sure I've seen that on a sign somewhere."

Officer Rhonda Sachs:"God, Toby. Wouldn't it be great if there were someone around here with communications skills who could go in there and tell them that?"

"Shut up."

His name is Toby Zachary Ziegler and he's the White House Director of Communications for the Bartlet Administration. His office is exactly sixty-three feet from the Oval Office.

He's 45, born December 23, 1954. Born in Brighton Beach, New York, he went to CCNY, and is a veteran (he did a tour of duty along the DMZ in Korea). Since then he's been behind-the-scenes in politics, a "professional political operative," but he never had a win until the Bartlet campaign. He and his ex-wife, Congresswoman Andrea (Andi) Wyatt, have twins, Huck and Molly.

Toby is a gifted speechwriter, but he's not the easiest guy to be around. He relaxes--if one can call it that--by bouncing a rubber ball. He's been known to play basketball and tennis, but that is definitely *not* relaxing. Neither is his furious passion for the Yankees. If you *must* get on his good side (too bad for you), give him pie.

Toby first arrives at Milliways near the end of season three of the series.

[Toby Ziegler is from the television series, "West Wing," and is the property of Warner Brothers. He appears here solely for the purpose of role-playing in Milliways Bar, from which no profit whatsoever is being made. Images of Richard Schiff belong to him.]
